Reward Activities

This past week was a really busy week. We were able to go to a play in which two actors portrayed Abraham and Mary Lincoln. This play was centered around the interaction between the two characters. They discussed the Civil War, other important people and events during that time period, their lives, their childhoods, and more. This event was centered around literacy and how important it is to people's lives.
In preparation for this event the students received a biography of Abraham Lincoln. The students were given a pacing guide for reading the book on their own. The students were given two weeks to completely read the book. In the classroom we watched a video about Abraham Lincoln and did many activities. Some of those activities included: writing an acrostic poem using the president's last name to make an informative poem, a reader's theater, read alouds, writing activities, word searches, art projects, and more.
After the students viewed the play they wrote in their journals about what they had learned, how they felt about the play, and what they would like to know more about. Overall, I think that the students really enjoyed their learning experiences centered around Lincoln. There were a good variety of activities and many opportunities for the students to learn. This was a great model for future activities in my own classroom and school.

  1. Glad you got to see how you can make a trip more meaningful using the time before and after...be careful that it's not just busywork, but meaningful work that help the kids see the connections, just like what you did.
