This past week I worked with the students on a creative art lesson. In one of my classes a few semesters ago I had to create a published piece. The piece that I ended up creating was a book that discussed the elements and principles of art seen through some of my favorite artworks. Since this was something that I had made previously I was really excited to use it in the classroom.
The lesson I decided to use it for was descriptive writing. As I read the students the book I described how the elements and principles were used in the painting as points to help describe, exaggerate, and create emphasis in the artwork. I explained to the students how important it is when you are writing to incorporate this in your writing.
Once the students had heard the story I put up a PowerPoint with a prompt and pictures of the artworks found in the books. I asked the students to pick an artwork and describe it using one of the elements or principles explained in the book. They were to focus on that element or principle and describe its use in the painting.
This lesson was a fun way for the students to get to incorporate visual artwork and writing together. The students seemed to be very enthusiastic about it and their writings were very good. Also, I had a lot of fun reading their opinions on the artworks.

This lesson was successful because it was interesting, personal, and meaningful to you. The kids recognize all those things and respond to it by enjoying it and learning something! Great job!
