The Artifact that I chose for this blog was my Lesson on Trust for my Kindergarten class this semester. I did this lesson for my EDUC 401 and Character Education. I thought that this lesson is a good representative for the third Characteristic of a Novice Teacher:
"We believe that the novice teacher should recognize that teaching is a professional, moral, and ethical enterprise, should understand moral issues and ethical practices in educational environments, and should have developed ethical frameworks which facilitate effective teaching."
I worked with students on their understanding of the concept of trust. I started off by asking them to close their eyes and then proceeded to make funny faces at them. If they laughed then I knew that they had not closed their eyes. This was the beginning of their lesson in trust. Then we read the book Strega Nona by Tomie DePola and had a discussion. Then the students drew a picture describing something that someone trusts them to do or something someone trusts them to do. The students also dictated a sentence to me and as a group we discussed their work.
In this lesson students learned how teachers trust their students and how they trust their teachers. I learned a lot about the personal relationships between teachers and students through our discussions. One thing I really noticed was how the students really do listen to what you say. For example, the Aid told one of the students that once she found the "Star Student" necklace that she would allow him to wear it. To me this doesn't seem important, but to him it was a major deal. I just realized how much the student trusted the teacher to follow through with their promises, even the little ones. This lesson was very reflective for me and made me pay more attention to my own actions.

I think it's important that you mentioned the trust that exists (or should exist) between teachers and students. I love this lesson. It sounds very engaging :-)
ReplyDeleteTrust is a hard concept to teach and effectively convey to students. I am sure the kids loved reading this book and discussting this topic. I am glad you realized that these students do listen even though you may have previous thought the opposite. Now you have to find a way to engage them in all lessons, no matter the topic. This artifact does support Characteristic 3, but does not discuss the embedded elements of the characteristic.
